The Spice of Lives

Once out of nature I shall never take
My bodily form from any natural thing,
But such a form as Grecian goldsmiths make
Of hammered gold and gold enamelling
To keep a drowsy Emperor awake;
Or set upon a golden bough to sing
To lords and ladies of Byzantium
Of what is past, or passing, or to come.

W B Yeats, Sailing to Byzantium
This is no country for old men, as you're well aware - unless you count novelty avatars, of course: too much to do and see and get to, in SL. One of the best things to me is when a friend sends me a Landmark, which turns into an adventure, and a post. Our good friend Mr. JJ Drinkwater of Caledon sent me a LM intriguingly marked 'Constantinople Library' a couple of weeks ago, and I just had to see for myself. Byzantium is on sim WORLDland 1, and that link 'should' bring you to their main landing point, on the shore below a cyclopic wall that I'm guessing shields the residents from pirates. You'll need to Tp inside, then you can walk to the various buildings which include a basilica, the imperial palace, a really nicely done bathhouse, the arena - probably the sim's greatest draw for regular bouts of fighting action - and of course the Library.
Byzantium is owned by Chili Lykin and Constantine Aristocarnas, who agreed to include the great Library in the build. Nev Loring is the man behind the bookshelves; he has been in SL for about a year, travelling and RP'ing from time to time. He's now mostly to be found in the company of the group !Byzantium, Rome, a RP group with an ...Imperial bent: empresses, servants, gladiators, even a living oracle. The group is new, but growing, - they already have a 'crew' of 15, plus other members, and join inter-sim events such as raids and festivals, within their RP parameters. I asked him how he would describe himself: adventurer, explorer or collector? Here's a picture of him having a think about that one.Nev Loring: It's hard to say. Perhaps an adventurous Collector of things gathered from places he has explored? I'd like to think of myself that way. My idea for the library was quite a simple one. I love books and want to share my passion with my fellow residents. Thanks to Constantine and Chili, I was lucky enough to be able to create the library as an integral part of this beautiful sim. The best thing about SL, to me, is the sheer variety - of places, of people, of experiences. I enjoy seeing and knowing people and places that in RL I'd never come into contact with. The worst thing is probably that there just aren't enough hours in the day to do all the things I'd like, and to see everyone.
Ancient Byzantium was a centre of learning, and the capital of the Roman Empire for a thousand years. Here's a video of Byzantium's history, take a look! It gives new meaning to the expression, "See you later" (that's a swan joke). At SL's Byzantium, neither historical accuracy nor the RP element is strictly adhered to, making it a fun and stress free environment. Here you can see the palace and the library with its distinctive dome. The smaller building is the bathhouse.The Library contains more than 700 books, including some RP scrolls related to ancient Rome and the provinces. The rest of the collection reflects Nev's eclectic taste, ranging from McElroy to Shakespeare to Kipling. The variety is truly amazing, and delightful. All these books were picked up inworld, by Nev, on his travels. The books in the library are free, and real, in the sense that you will not only find URLs to online texts here, but the SL books themselves have richly illustrated covers, and are as ornamental as they are entertaining, perfect for the virtual coffee table. I picked up a copy of Among Malay Pirates by G A Henry, because I like pirates. You can see my book down in the Italian bit.
I asked Nev for whom he would build an Arts Park, supposing he'd the prims and the inclination.
Nev Loring: If I had to choose a single person it would be William Butler Yeats. He was an Irishman like me, a Nobel prize winner, and one of the greatest "High Art" poets.
I wondered what a Yeats park would look like: do you have any ideas? Now I've got you thinking... real talent, and SL slipping into RL again - that's my second favourite virtual thing, after pirates. Speaking of which, do you remember last month's post about talented artist and designer Yaia Nishi, and her Squirrel pictures, that were going to be used at the Santa Cecilia performance in Rome? Well, everything went off swimmingly, and there are photos to prove it... you'll find them here on Facebook.

D'oro battuto e smalto dorato
Per tener desto un Imperatore sonnolento;

W B Yeats, Viaggiando verso Bisanzio

Nev Loring: Domanda difficile! Io ho scelto Among the Malay Pirates, di G A Henry - un libro d'avventura esotica.
